Present Day…

First I couldn’t understand what the officer said. Then I couldn’t believe a word when I understood what he said the second time. I was frozen. The world around me came down crashing. Everything stood still in front of me. I still couldn’t figure out what to do… Rajesh walked over to me to check if I would be coming down for lunch. I just stood there staring in a state of shock.

‘Kya huva Arjun… Kuch bolte kyun nehi (What happened Arjun? Why wouldn’t you say something)?

‘Sh…She’s dead!’

Not long ago…

I opened the door and was least surprised to see Zoya.

She was standing there, completely drenched in rain. She had an embarrassed smile on her face and her greenish blue eyes were staring at me sadly. Even though I knew she was completely soaked, just for the pleasure of annoying her I said, ‘Hey, You seem to look complete drenched! Is it raining?’

She was visibly annoyed, but requested me if I am fine with her staying that one night at my apartment as the rooms in the nearby motel were completely full. I gave her a smile and let her in without a second thought. She got inside my apartment. I gave her a towel to dry her hair and asked her to use the other bedroom.

She went into the bedroom and then came out with in few moments. She said, ‘isn’t there a bathroom inside this bedroom?’

‘No! There is just one bathroom in this apartment and that’s next to the kitchen’ She had to put a gentle involuntary smile at me and went ahead to use the bathroom. She was visibly upset and I sensed it right away!

The sad part of this entire conversation was that, though I desperately wanted to be friends with the powerful sex, I was very bad and hardly had a clue of how to deal with them! All my life, girls were equally baffling to Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle. At times, difficult than calculus, human body and religion (In no particular order).

Their frequent tantrums, unending questions, thoughts that range from chocolates to everything pink perplexed me. To me they were an extreme set of gizmo’s gadgets imported from Planet ‘Neptune’ by men just to have babies and progress their bloodline (Stone Age Times – Ah! Those were the best days!) but in turned out to be the other way round… We ended being slaves to them similar to humans from the Terminator movies. Zoya actually looked more like an extraterrestrial to me.

That night, before she settled down in the other bedroom, I asked her if she wants something to eat.

‘No, Thank You.’

‘Ok! Good night. Hope you are comfortable. Call me in case your require anything’.

That night I called up Rajesh in India and explained him what was going on. He was first surprised about the thought of a girl staying at my apartment. But I siphoned his surprise by telling him that it wasn’t the blondie but some random Indian girl. But he fed some food for thought into me that sharing the rent with someone would greatly reduce my burden and help me look into other needs…
