Not long ago…

The following day, I went all out to impress her during breakfast. I knocked the bedroom door and asked her if she would be joining me for breakfast. She agreed to join me in 15 minutes. I made scrambled eggs, bread toasts and some coffee. She joined me for breakfast and was wearing night shorts and a probably XXXL sized T-Shirt. She looked like a thin court stand with a t shirt hung. ‘Seriously… Is that what she’s wearing?’ I thought.

She thanked me for the breakfast and finished it. I thought this was the right moment in convincing this girl to join me as a flat mate in my apartment.

I explained her that we can have a set of rules and regulations  not to enter each other’s room without prior notice and approvals, demarcated timings for use of washrooms in the mornings, take turns in making breakfasts and dinners considering we have lunch at our campus jobs, cleaning the apartment every Sunday and a lot more. She was convinced to an extent but was still doubtful of staying.

‘Just to clear the air, can you please tell me what the problem is?’ I asked.

She smiled for a moment which was followed by a pause and then she said, ‘I cannot conceal the fact that I am staying with you in this apartment from my parents. I am just worried that they might make a huge scene out of it. Not to forget the fact that I had to literally struggle to travel here to finish my masters!’

‘I understand. I have an idea… Explain them, that you are staying with a couple of roommates who are girls from some European country and that there is no other option available right now for an accommodation. And never ever reveal that you are sharing our apartment with me! Take all your Skype calls and chat either in the campus or in your bedroom!’

She thought for some time, and then agreed with one condition – We need to have a roommate agreement where she would be an equal stakeholder in the apartment.

I was more than happy to let someone be responsible along with me in case something crazy happened. I was more than happy to oblige. I gave her a convincing nod and explained the same to Marc the following evening. He was happy to prepare a reworked rental agreement and present it to us the next day.

The next day, we decided to complete the formalities. As I was least bothered to ask her any questions so far, I took some time out to have friendly chat with her.

‘So which part of India are you from?’ I asked her with curiosity.

‘I am from Karachi’, She said with a smile.

I hardly believed her. But her expression of – ‘Yes and do you have a problem with that’, confirmed that she was from the land of India’s most trusted neighbors. I went blank for some time and then said,

‘For a change, it’s great to see people from Pakistan travel to America…’

‘What change?’

‘…for studying and not driving taxis!’
