Not long ago…

We went to the manager. I saw the Blondie still sitting in the lobby. ‘Hey Marc… I guess there is some confusion… You gave the wrong room number to…Ah… Zoya…?’

‘Nope…! I just gave the right room number but forgot telling her that she had to share the room with a guy for a week until I find her some accommodation.’

‘Are you kidding me? I thought it was the Blondie sitting over there…’ I whispered to him.

He cunningly laughed as if he had found the key to the temple of doom and said, ‘Man! You are funny! I showed you this girl while she was sitting over there and you thought it was my niece? Bonkers…’

I couldn’t take Marc’s onion cream infested breath and the shower he was sprinkling all over my face with his forbidden laugh… ‘Alright, so what’s the deal now?’ I said.

Zoya was already annoyed with this discussion and she explained Marc that she comes from an orthodox Muslim family and her culture wouldn’t agree to share a living space with a guy. Hence, she wanted a room where she can stay put even on a couch provided it’s an all-girls apartment!

‘What’s the point she’s trying to make? Does it mean that I am from an unorthodox family?’ I thought but didn’t say a word to annoy or pick up a conversation with her!

Marc nodded in agreement with her but didn’t have a clue of what to do. He ran over his records but still couldn’t find a suitable accommodation. He checked on a couple of apartments occupied by Punjabi & Gujarati girls but they were already full. Then he tried calling a couple of Telugu girls but that didn’t work either. Those girls were on their way to India on holiday and would be back only after 3 weeks. In short there were no rooms and she was stranded for at least 2 weeks. Marc had a mortified look on his face. He had promised Zoya before she started from her destination but had no indication of what to do now.

Even though I was dejected that it wasn’t the Blondie but an Asian mademoiselle I took pity on her situation. I asked Zoya, ‘I understand that it’s a very bad and annoying moment. But if you are fine, then you can stay at my apartment until you find an accommodation. There’s nothing to be embarrassed off… It has two bedrooms with attached bathrooms giving you complete privacy…And you can always lock from the inside for your safety and personal keeping!’

She was listening but at the same time she was confused, angry and unmindful of what I was sharing with her. She didn’t know where to divert her frustration, she said, ‘Thanks, but never mind. I will look for a hotel or B&B options’

‘But B&B are very costly in here and not safe. ‘

‘Let me give a try.’

‘Fine…’ I took a paper from the front desk and wrote my number.

‘This is my number. If you need any help, please feel free to call me.’ She took it

‘Thanks’.

‘You are welcome.’

That night, it was pouring heavily with thunder and lightning. I was already dejected that I couldn’t get to know the Blondie chick but at the same time, thought that, ‘Had it not been Zoya, I would have gone ‘head over heels’ to convince the Blondie to share my living space…But as you always know, No matter how hard you try and fight with fate you never get what you want…You only get what you deserve! ’

As expected in every ‘boy meets girl’ story, there was the inevitable door knock…
