Present Day…

‘I am I talking to Mr. Arjun Raam?’

‘Yeah, speaking…’

‘My name is Alex Mulder. I am the local sheriff here in Orange County. I am calling you to report an accident that took place in the neighborhood…’

The voice was feeble and barely audible…‘Sorry…What…? Couldn’t hear you…Could you repeat that? ‘
‘I am really sorry to say this sir but your wife died in the accident…’

Not long ago…

My next week involved in convincing the cafeteria manager that it was not my mistake to get hurt and I had to keep the job at all costs. But unfortunately that never worked out. My convincing skills always went for a toss when I had to convince on topics and issues ranging from significant to illogical. Hence I didn’t have an impact on him! He had already hired a local student…

‘But why…?’ I asked

‘Because, you never picked my calls…’ said the cafeteria manager!

In just over a month, I was back to square one. Dejected, I walked back to my apartment. I received a call from the dorm manager that I had someone waiting to meet me. I thought for a moment as to who that ‘someone’ might be. ‘Was it the cops or the guys who beat the crap out of me a week ago or my parents or my sister…?’ Though I walked faster towards my building lobby, I gradually reduced my pace… My dorm manager Marc spoke,

‘Hey Arjun…! You have been looking for someone who could share your flat and guess what…?’

‘You’ve found one?’

‘Yeah…’

‘That is awesome!’

‘You see the girl over there in the lobby! She’s currently looking for an accommodation. Unfortunately, the entire building’s full and you are the only guy around who is living in a two bedroom flat as well as on the lookout for a roommate. If you are ok with this, then you could accommodate her until I find a suitable accommodation for her. Is that fine son…?’

Though you might have heard the phrase, ‘Love at first sight’, for me it was Girl at first sight… Phorin Maal (As we say it in India)… Now my brain was super active and really motivated after all the ‘Crouching Tiger and the Hidden Dragon’ that happened a week ago… ‘A white blonde…! Holy shit! That’s legendary! (Still didn’t sound as cool as Barney Stinson)…’ I thought…

Making sure the motivational face was nowhere to be found; I maintained a cool dude look and shrugged, ‘Ok Marc… Sounds good…Sure’

‘Ok then! That’s great! Come; let me introduce you to her…’

I looked at myself in the lobby mirror, and I was in my bandages… I didn’t want Marc to introduce me to her in plasters and bandages…So I said, ‘Save me the pain of introduction, let me go and get a quick shower and you can send her directly to my apartment…’

‘Hmmm…Ok…’

I went into my flat, checked out if there is anything lying around or out of place. Ever since I was badly beaten for my heroic resistance, I was living in a horrible condition similar to a slum-dweller from Mumbai’s Azad Nagar.

I removed all my used clothes that were lying around and dumped them into the washing machine. I rushed to the bathroom, removed my bandages and plasters, washed my face, sprayed some room freshener around and cleaned my kitchen sink. I was almost set and then the knock came,

‘Hi’

‘Aaaaahhh… Hi…!’ I said in surprise

A girl was standing at my door. She wore low hip blue denim and a long sleeves white shirt with her head covered in a black scarf. She looked inside the flat as if she was searching for someone.

‘BTW, I am Zoya’ she said with a perky smile. I could see the dimples on her cheeks when she smiled.

‘Hi Zoya…’ I said, extending my hand out of courtesy.

‘Can I come in?’

What the heck? I thought and then I said, ‘Sure’

‘So where is your friend? Is she around? Just wanted to meet her before I move in…’

I thought that ‘This chick is definitely lost!’ and said, ‘Sorry… You are mistaken. I live here and I don’t have anyone around except me’

‘Ok… Is this flat 314?’

‘Yup…’

‘Then I guess Marc sent me to the right place… ‘

‘Ah… No… I don’t think so… ‘

‘Let me get back and check with Marc again.’ said Zoya.

‘Sure. Do you need some help with the luggage?’

She stood there for ten seconds thinking and then said, ‘Why not’
